Certificate of Competence for becoming Welding Co-ordinator

Welding is a special process, wich involve co-ordination of all operations to be realised, before, during, and after welding, to be fully confident in the fabrication method and to be sure that product manufactured is reliable in services conditions, it is recommended that tasks and responsabilities of personnel working activities related to welding, for example plannig, fabrication, supervision and testing are clearly defined.
For this purpose, standard EN ISO 3834 for welding quality requirements and EN ISO 14731 relative to Welding Co-ordinator as been published as French Standards, end of 2006.
Parts 2 and 3 from EN ISO 3834 require taht companies, in wich welding activity is important, have Welding Co-ordinator(s).
Nevertheless, application of standards EN ISO 3834 is a voluntary field and let the choice to the company to have or not a Welding Co-ordinator and to decide of his level of knoweldge.
According to EN ISO 14731, Weding Co-ordinator is a "person who, within a manufacture, is responsible of welding activities and related activities to welding with competence and knoweldge proved, for example, by way of training, education and/or relevant experience in fabrication. Welding Co-ordinator is a person who performs one or several Co-ordination tasks"

EN ISO 14731 defines three levels of welding co-ordinatord :

Co-ordinator of comprehensive welding knoweldge, for example INTERNATIONAL WELDING ENGINEER (IWE)
Welding co-ordination personnel with comprehensive technical knoweldge allowing him to perform planning, fabrication, supervision and testing of any task and responsability that are devolving on to him in the field of welding construction.

Co-ordinator with specific knoweldge, for example INTERNATIONAL WELDING TECHNOLOGIST (IWT)
Welding co-ordination personnel with technical knoweldge suficient to allow him to perform planning, fabrication, supervision and testing of any task and responsability related to welding fabrication in a specific or limited field.

Co-ordinator with basic welding knoweldge, for example INTERNATIONAL WELDINT SPECIALIST (IWS)
Welding co-ordination personnel with technical knoweldge suficient to allow him to perform planning, fabrication, supervision and testing of any task and responsability related to welding fabrication in a limited technical field, requiring only realisation of simple welding work.


PROCEDURE
When techinical knoweldge of a candidate cannot be demonstrated directly by presentation of an international diploma such as indicated in appendix of standard EN ISO 14731, Association Française du Soudage (AFS) propose to validate, as third part body, the level of knoweldge of the Welding Co-ordinator in his daily works conditions. An assessor approved by AFS during a visit of half a day performs assesment of the candidate in his manufacture. Comittee CEITS of AFS award certificate of competence on the basis of audit report.
When AFS has assessed, as third part body, in a positive way the tehcnical knoweldge of the candidate for his activities related to welding within the company, the manager of this company shall approved his welding Co-ordinator, in accordance with requirements of EN ISO 14731 § 5.2.
